Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions Induction Postponed

Waterloo, Iowa – Due to unforeseen circumstances with Rulon Gardner’s schedule, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is postponing the Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions scheduled for October 9, 2010, in Minneapolis, Minn. The event will be rescheduled for a date when Gardner can attend.

Gardner, a 2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World champion, was scheduled to be this year’s lone inductee. The Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions is located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. Gardner was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a distinguished member in Stillwater, Okla., earlier this year.

The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum will reschedule the event for next year.

“We regret that unforeseen circumstances have kept Rulon Gardner from attending his induction into the Greco-Roman Hall of Champions,” said Alan Rice, namesake of the Hall of Champions. “We respect the confidentiality of his personal situation that forced his cancelation; however, we look forward to his induction into the hall of champions next year.”

Rulon Gardner to enter Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions

WATERLOO – The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is proud to announce that Rulon Gardner, the most decorated American Greco-Roman wrestler, will be inducted into the Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions on Saturday, October 9, 2010. The event will take place at the Christensen Center Commons on the campus of Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Jim and Olive Morgan family will be given the first Greco-Roman Legacy Award for their tremendous accomplishments in wrestling, specifically in the Greco-Roman discipline. A family of 12 kids, six boys and six girls, Jim passed along his boxing and wrestling skills to his boys.

John, Gordy and Marty – sons of Jim and Olive – won a combined 10 national Greco-Roman titles and competed in two Olympics and two World championships.

Alan and Gloria Rice, namesakes of the hall of champions, have been instrumental to the success of Greco-Roman wrestling in the United States. Alan Rice was a Big Ten champion and All-American for the University of Minnesota. In 1956 he won national titles in Greco-Roman and freestyle. He also placed 7th at the 1956 Olympics and coached the 1972 Greco-Roman Olympic team.

He and his wife, Gloria, helped form the Minnesota Wrestling Club. The club enjoys the unique distinction of placing a wrestler on every World and Olympic team since 1964, a record unequalled in wrestling history. The Alan & Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions occupies a significant wing in the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo.

“Inducting Rulon into the Greco-Roman Hall of Champions is a great recognition for a great champion and his five peers. Many people thought that no American could ever triumph in this style of wrestling. Now the world recognizes the capacities of our great country to produce great champions,” Rice stated.

Gardner shocked the world in the finals of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, when he defeated legendary Russian Alexander Karelin in the finals of the superheavyweight division. Karelin had won 12 World and Olympic titles up to that point. Gardner won the World Championships in 2001 and also captured the bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece.

Gardner joins last year’s inaugural class in this elite Hall. The 2009 class included Olympic champions Steve Fraser and Jeff Blatnick and World champions Mike Houck, Dennis Hall and Joe Warren.

Gardner was inducted as a Distinguished Member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla., on June 5, 2010.

Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. with a reception. Dinner, awards presentation and autograph session will follow.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at or by calling the Dan Gable Museum at 319-233-0745.

Top 10 Unbeatable Star Letdowns Ever

Filed under: Media — marquisathletes @ 6:51 pm

The Bleacher Report just announced their “Top 10 Unbeatable Star Letdowns Ever” and the #3 letdown was “Alexander Karelin Loses His Greatness.”

Jon Star writes, “Karelin, Russia’s greatest Greco-Roman wrestler, was not just on a decade-long winning streak….In fact, he cruised to the gold medal match [in the Sydney Olympic Games] without giving up a point in a decade and had not lost in 15 years. He won three gold medals and seven straight world titles. That was until he faced the enormous underdog in American Rulon Gardner. Gardner slayed the Russian giant…”

Congratulations, Rulon!

Tips for Successful Speaker Events

You’ve decided to hire a motivational speaker for your next event to inspire your staff and/or customers, but if you’ve never worked with a speaker, you’re probably thinking–now what? You want your event to be a success, and you don’t want to walk away from the event thinking you made a mistake–or worse wasted your company’s resources on the event. Here’s some tips to help make your event a success:

1. If you haven’t already hired a speaker, work hard to make sure you’ve hired a great one!  Sounds simple, but not all speakers are created equal–ask for references, ask for a copy of the speech on DVD, ask how often they get repeat business (and ask for one of those companies as a reference).

2. Plan your event early! If you’re scrambling at the last minute, you’re more likely to forget important details.

3. Know your program materials (or just the message you want to convey in the event) and provide this information to your speaker. Ask them to weave your message or company ideals into their speech. Set up a conference call with the speaker a week before the event to go over your key points–this will help tie the entire event together, and a great speaker will do this seamlessly within their existing speech.

4. Have a back-up plan in mind–things happen, you want to be prepared! Have an alternate speaker in mind (preferably someone local). A great speaker won’t just cancel on your event (they’ll be contractually obligated to attend), but that doesn’t mean an accident can’t happen on the way to the airport, or the week before. You’ll also want to book the flight for the speaker to allow time for the inevitable airport delays, traffic en route to your event, etc.

5. Ask your speaker how long their speech is, whether they allow Q&A and what their policy is on autographs–great speakers can tweak the length of their speech to fit your event, you can organize Q&A ahead of time to make it run smoothly (i.e., by having people submit questions in advance, then your planning team can just pick the best ones) and great speakers will make sure your attendees get autographs (many speakers will walk away at the end of a set time period, whether there are people in line or not).

What other ideas have helped make your events a success?

“Rulon Gardner defeats Alexander Karelin” Named “#7 Upset in Sports History”–above “The Miracle on Ice”

The “Bleacher Report” announced its “Giant Killers: Top 10 Upsets in Sports History” this week, and “Rulon Gardner defeats Alexander Karelin” was listed as the #7 upset–above “The Miracle on Ice” which came in at #10. Gardner’s stunning defeat of Russian Alexander Karelin was also the first Olympic upset on the list, and along with “The Miracle on Ice” they were the only Olympic upsets on the list.

The article begins by explaining that “one word can be used to describe certain teams that overcome adversity to win and that is excellence. Excellence is a trait that is not built in teams, but is earned. Underdogs achieve excellence through hard work and determination to upset unbeatable favorites.”

The article describes Gardner’s defeat of Karelin this way:

Russian wrestler Alexander Karelin had not surrendered a single point during a 10-year span heading into the 2000 Summer Olympics. He had never lost in 15 years of international competition, and had won three consecutive Olympic gold medals and seven consecutive world titles….Karelin faced American Rulon Gardner who had never finished better than fifth in any international wrestling competition. This was supposed to be another opponent crushed at the hands of Alexander the Great, but on this night it was Gardner who won gold in a stunning 1-0 defeat of Karelin. Gardner crushed the one-man dynasty of Karelin in Sydney and claimed the golf, solidifying Gardner as one of the biggest underdogs in Olympic history.”‘

The complete Top 10 list is:

1. Upset upsets Man O’ War

2. 2007 NBA Playoffs: No. 8 Warriors def. No. 1 Mavericks

3. Super Bowl XLII: Giants def. Patriots

4. George Mason advances to Final Four

5. Buster Douglas knocks out Mike Tyson

6. 1984 NCAA Final: Villanova stuns Georgetown

7. Rulon Gardner defeats Alexander Karelin

8. 1969 Miracle Mets

9. Super Bowl III: Jets def. Colts

10. The Miracle on Ice

Rulon Gardner is available for motivational speeches to corporate groups, nonprofits and schools. He shares with his audience how he overcame adversity to win Olympic gold, and how he earned excellence through hard work and determination. Congratulations Rulon on your induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame! It’s been an honor and a privilege to work with you, and to bring your motivational speeches to people around the world. Representing you and your work is easy because after all this time, I still get goose bumps when I think about all you’ve accomplished and the fight in your soul that has kept you at the top of your game for so long. Whenever people ask me about you and your message, I sum it up this way–“I’ve heard his speech approximately 10,000 times at this point, and without fail, every single time, I have this unbelievable urge to “go out and do something with my life” as soon as it’s done.” That’s pretty special and pretty rare, and so are you. I’m very proud of you anyway, but especially proud today.

Rulon’s plaque at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK reads, “Rulon Gardner cartwheeled into the hearts of all Americans when he upset the seemingly invincible Russian Alexander Karelin at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.”
